CEO and Executive Principal
Matthew is in his 23rd year of teaching and 19th year as a senior leader in schools. Matthew is passionate about maximising every learners’ potential and celebrating the greatness in every child. Matthew’s qualifications include; a BA (Hons) Degree in PE and Geography with Qualified Teacher Status from Brighton University in the UK, a Masters (MA) Degree in School Leadership from Canterbury ChristChurch University in the UK and the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers, again in the UK. Before joining GEMS, Matthew was the Principal of Skinners’ Kent Academy, an Outstanding school in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The School supported all pupils to realise their best and achieve beyond expectation. In 2018, the School was in the top 1% in the country for the progress pupils made in both English and Mathematics on a number of DfE measures. Matthew believes strongly in distributed leadership and accredits the Outstanding judgement the School received from Ofsted (June 2016) as an achievement gained by the whole School community. This family centred ethos and drive for improvement will be felt by all in his role of Principal / CEO of GEMS First Point School.
Matthew’s vision for GEMS First Point School is to develop exceptional young people who are successful in life. GEMS First Point School will become one of the highest achieving schools in Dubai and will be renowned around the world for its advanced practices and the quality of its learners. He will work alongside the pupils, staff, parents and the community to ensure that every learner is supported and stretched to perform at their very best. All learners will have a strong moral compass that will guide them to make good, positive decisions. The School will continue to develop the quality of teaching and learning and outcomes for pupils. Matthew has a very strong track record in these areas and will utilise digital technologies and innovative practice to maximise achievement for all learners.
On a personal level, Matthew is a very keen sportsman. When he was younger, he played for 17 years as a semi-professional footballer and was also a 3 handicap golfer. Matthew still enjoys his golf and supporting sport including the School teams. Matthew has 2 children of his own, aged 15 and 13, and his wife also works at GEMS FirstPoint School as a Teaching Assistant in Year 3.
