The Varkey Foundation

The Varkey Foundation

Every child deserves a vibrant, stimulating learning environment that awakens and supports their full potential.

According to UNESCO, around 57 million primary school–aged children are out of school along with more than 71 million lower-secondary school–aged children. And for those children who do attend a school in the developing world, a lack of trained teachers often acts as a barrier to learning.

The Varkey Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that builds new classrooms and centers of learning, addresses global teaching capacity and seeds excellence and innovation in the next generation of educators.

We also work in collaboration with likeminded organisations such as Dubai Cares, UNESCO and Oxfam. Through these partnerships we support a number of projects that aim to improve access to education worldwide.

The Varkey Foundation’s projects include:

  • Teacher training – developing skills required to improve pedagogy within the school to improve childrens’ quality of learning.
  • Improving school leadership in Kenya, Ghana and India - training 10,000 school principals in leadership and professional development with UNESCO.
  • Building classrooms and rebuilding schools – creating safer and equipped learning environments for children in Kibera and Pakistan.
  • Learning Resource Centers - building low cost, highly replicable science centers in rural India.
  • Providing midday school meals- to improve access to education.
